Aladdin

I found some time on my own, so checked out what is playing.  I ended up needing to choose between Godzilla, and Aladdin.  I went for the Guy Richie film, and figured that Will Smith would deliver something unexpected.  Then, I quickly found out that this version is a musical.  I can't stand musicals, but I had paid my money and I was seated, so I decided to brave it out. I was surprised to see that it is the exact same film as the original animated film, and thought about how daunting it must have been for The Fresh Prince to follow the act of Robin Williams.  Luckily the two leads are incredible singers and the film provided some nice surprises.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

With the Avengers film loitering in theatres, it is movie-going winter, but Finch and I did rustle up the courage to go see Detective Pikachu.  Finch mentioned, off-hand, that he had low expectations for the film, and I concurred, saying that it is Ryan Reynolds that drew me to the film. With these lowered expectations, we had a fun time watching the movie.  The comedy is targeted at a younger audience, though there is a scene with a mime that had some great moments, particularly the subtle, macabre ending to the scene.  The CG was the driving force of the film, which is necessary, in my opinion, otherwise, we're all watching another Pokemon animation.  I'm happy that I went to see it, but not sure if I would have if there were some other options.
