Birds of Prey

Fingers crossed, I headed to Birds of Prey with Finch and D.  I was a bit apprehensive since DC had flubbed a few big budget movies lately, trying to play Marvel's game.  There was a lot of potential for another "whiffer" based on my only knowledge of the film, the poster.

Once the move was rolling along, I was able to relax.  It looks like DC have found their niche for these times and have regained their stride, not forgetting that DC have been the original hero film winners with Superman then Batman then Batman again.

The actors did a nice job of creating a playful but ultimately menacing tone.  The lines of good and bad are refreshingly blurred, or folded, ripped, thrown through the wash and left to hang up and dry.  A favorite visual for me is the glitter grenades.  As terrible as it is, I can't stop from laughing each time one hits.

Deadpool 2

I went to a Friday, mid-day showing of Deadpool 2 , by myself. I particularly like the total disrespect for the fourth wall.  There are a ton of references for people my age, as well as a gut-busting use of straight-up comedy, paired with CG, to create the "cock-shirting it" scene - I was laughing so hard, I was becoming concerned with annoying the other moviegoers.  I liked seeing Cable, as well as X-Force, since X-Force was my original foray into Marvel Comics.

Shazam

Finch and I grabbed a bowl of spicy Japanese ramen in the shopping district near my home, then beetled over to the cinema to catch Shazam .  This film is full of surprises for me.  The first surprise is that it is a fantastic film.  I was expecting a middling action film that tries a bit to hard too compete with Marvel films.  The comedy was set up well, and easily interlaces with an inviting conflict.  Both actors portraying the edifice of the main character did a great job of creating a combination of a single character.  Levi stole the show as a convincing fifteen-year-old inside a 38-year-old super-hero. The second surprise is that the school that the boys attend is the same location of my rookie year as a high-school teacher.  It's not much of a fact, but it endears the movie to me a bit further.

Captain Marvel

Since Finch and I have free Thursdays for the next few weeks, we decided to make the most of it and go to an early afternoon showing of Captain Marvel .  I liked the characters and the comedy, although undersold at times, was enjoyable.  The turns of the story were nice and sometimes surprising. The basic structure of the film, though, seemed forced, almost as though this film is entirely an exposition for Avengers; End Game.  On its own, this is a feel good action film, but as a part of the Marvel universe, so late in the game, it felt 'clunky'.  The creators of this movie used it as a vehicle to to expand the backstories and forced it into the cannon, for better or worse.
